Time for some more quiet
conversations between Landlords and Retailers?
Absolutely – still some stress in the system!
This time last year at the commencement of the retail downturn we recommended to both retailers and their Shopping Centre landlords that it would be useful to have some honest conversations around ‘occupancy stress (rent)’ issues.
·
Although background circumstances surrounding Australian and
New Zealand retail trading is no longer ‘total uncertainty’ The RETAiL Alert
Group is hearing that a number of Australian and New Zealand retailers are
considering trimming store portfolios because of high occupancy costs.
· There is no future in Shopping Centres having empty stores – it affects the balance of sitting tenants within a shopping centre as well as the landlord.
It is hoped that the maturity shown in 2008 can be replicated in 2009 with Australian and New Zealand retailers and their Shopping Centre landlords having those ‘quiet conversations’?
