Australian Retail Trading Hours and Awards – a mess!
Surely the Australian Retail Sector Associations can agree to pressure Harmonised change Trading and Awards reform through Julia Gillard and COAG?

As indicated last week for the Australian specialty, medium and SME retailers’ there are two critical costs, Occupancy (rent) and Payroll.
We said:
· Occupancy is an ongoing debate specific to the small retail sector – Payroll affects all Australian retailers large and small.
We also said surely the main Australian retail sector associations the ARA, the NRA and the ANRA can agree to work together delivering long overdue Australian Retail Trading Hours and Award reforms relevant to the needs of Australian consumers and Australian retailers.
The silence from the retail sector associations has been deafening – not sure that they get it.
For the last year The RETAiL Alert Group has raised this as one of the key issues for the proposed Australian Retail Sector Umbrella association – maybe the ARIG (Australian Retail Industry Group).
· We intend to make this one of our central retail sector reform causes moving into 2010.
· The RETAiL Alert Group would be delighted to arrange a meeting of the main retail sector associations to discuss this issue.
